Geography without borders - StattReisen Saar ( acronym GoG) is a registered association based in Saarbrücken . On tours, excursions, hikes and day trips, the association shows the cultural and natural diversity of the Saarland state capital and its surrounding area. The tours lead in particular to destinations in Saarland , as well as to neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate and across the borders to Luxembourg , Belgium , Lorraine and Alsace .

Concept and goals

The association wants to promote regional tourism and environmental education in the Greater Region and contribute to the sustainable development of the region. It is only superficially about tourism aspects. The actual goal is rather to make the previously unknown to the Saarbrücken and Saarland residents of their homeland visible, to show connections and to strengthen the formation of identity. For this purpose, excursion leaders go with the participants on the search for clues in Saarbrücken, in the area surrounding the state capital and in the greater region. They show unusual angles and lead to places off the beaten path. On the basis of the detected details, the participants get to know and understand the natural, historical, cultural, social and political relationships. In this way, geographical knowledge is to be passed on in an understandable way to a broader public.

offer

The association's guided events take place all year round - with the exception of December to February. The program is open to anyone interested. Every year around a hundred appointments take place in the open program - usually on Fridays and on the two days of the weekend.

The keyword “architecture and art” includes, for example, the baroque Saarbrücken, the historic churches of old Saarbrücken or the building culture of the post-war period. The participants can also discover individual city districts and residential areas or squares and gardens. During further tours, for example, the Saarbrücken Museum Mile is presented or the art in the city center is explored. Several tours lead to Saarbrücken's cemeteries.

The “History” category is about the bridges of the Saar and the Saar shipping, to the theaters of war on the Spicherer Heights or to the mining past in Saarland . A historical journey through Saarbrücken is also flanked by organ sounds. Further topics are, for example, the “female parts” in the cityscape of Saarbrücken or the traces of the writer Alfred Döblin in Saargemünd in France .

In cooperation with Saarbrücken office managers, urban policy projects are also discussed: For example, the participants learn how urban planning works or how environmental management is incorporated into urban development policy.

You can also explore nature and the landscape on guided walks in the Saarbrücken region: for example, on an ornithological evening tour through the Simbachtal or a hike to the spring flowers in the Deutschmühlental. Further tours lead to the industrial and forest history of the Saarkohlenwald , to the Upper Muschelkalk on Birzberg near Fechingen and to other landscapes of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve . During an enjoyable farm tour, the participants can also taste selected products here. Hikes on designated premium hiking trails in the regional association are also on the program, including the Blies-Grenz-Weg , the Schäfertrail in Warndt, the wild Netzbachtal in the primeval forest or the Frohn-Wald-Weg.

For day trips , the Greater Region for example, the Eifel, the Vosges or the tri-border region can be explored. The newly designed day tours include a beer pleasure trip to Alpirsbach , gardens in Lorraine, Luxembourg contrasts and a completely new view of the historic and futuristic Metz.

Individually bookable group tours can be organized on request for almost all tours of the open program. The program also contains some tours that can only be booked as a group event, for example brewing tradition in old Saarbrücken, baroque Saarbrücken, the Nauwieser Viertel and plants in the city center.

In the early years of Geography Without Borders, it was almost exclusively students and graduates in the field of geography from Saarland University, but now the excursion leaders come from various disciplines, for example from urban planning, architecture, urban sociology, history and art history, archeology, geology or biology .
