The Georg Büchner School in Rodgau , Jügesheim district , is a cooperative comprehensive school in the Offenbach district , Hesse , with around 1000 students in grades 5 to 10. It was named after the poet Georg Büchner .

The upper secondary school cooperating with the school is the Claus-von-Stauffenberg-Schule in Rodgau-Dudenhofen .

School history

The elementary school built in 1956 in the then independent community of Jügesheim was supplemented by a secondary school branch in 1962. An extension with ten classrooms went into operation in 1964. The gym was built in 1968.

In 1970 a funding level was set up. In 1971, the primary school students moved to the newly opened Wilhelm Busch School; the remaining secondary and secondary schools were named Georg Büchner School.

The school development plan provided for the conversion into a comprehensive school in 1972 . Between 1974 and 1977 the buildings were expanded to accommodate the larger number of students. On August 2, 1976, the school-type comprehensive school began teaching. The old building from 1956 was rededicated as a primary school, later the Carl Orff School.

After a few years it became clear that the plan was too small. In 1979, specialist rooms had to be converted into classrooms for the first time. Lessons were also held in windowless interiors - initially by the hour, then regularly in later years.

A three-field sports hall was inaugurated in 1980. In the same year, the first students were released from an upper level, although construction had only just begun. Until the upper school moved to Dudenhofen in November 1981, lessons were held in pavilions that were left over from the renovation.

Despite all efforts, the room capacities were insufficient. What was true of many schools was also true of the Georg Büchner School: The politicians had not expected such high numbers of students. Especially the high school branch has been frequented more and more since the beginning of the 1980s.

In 1987 parts of the school building had to be freed from an insulating layer containing asbestos using an expensive and laborious process . After a week of asbestos vacation , the teachers developed an emergency program with shift work and shortened lessons. In the summer of 1987, three 5th grades were accepted for the first time in the grammar school branch. This meant the end of the funding stage, which was dissolved in 1989.

In 1994 some specialist rooms were relocated to the inner area of the school building in order to provide more classrooms with daylight. In the following years, too, there were more classes than classrooms.

More than 80 deficiencies in structural fire protection were found in 1999. In June 2000, the district council decided to carry out a fundamental renovation with an estimated cost of DM 33 million, which began in 2001 and was completed in mid-2007. During the construction period, some of the lessons took place in pavilions. In the first construction phase, a new building with scientific rooms and an auditorium was built, which was moved into in 2004. In the second and third construction phases, the existing buildings were torn down to the ground and rebuilt. In November 2005 the Offenbach district put the total costs at 21.7 million euros.

Dealing with G8 / G9

The eight-year high school ( G8 ), which was made compulsory in Hesse for the 2006/2007 school year, had been running as a pilot project at the Georg Büchner School since the 2002/2003 school year.

The students for the G8 class at the Georg Büchner School were specifically selected from the 5th grade of the grammar school branch during the pilot project. In addition to the wishes of parents and pupils, the performance of the pupils also played a major role: average grade 2 (“good”), no major subject worse than 3 (“satisfactory”).

After a phase of the mandatory G8 offer, the school switched back to G9 in the 2011/2012 school year.
