Georg (e) Wagsfort was a tunnel and a treasure trove in Wittigsthal near Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains . In 1789 the Berlin chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth discovered the new element uranium in an ore containing pitchblende from the excavations of this mine .

history

The treasure trove was muted in the fourth quarter of 1670. Hans Georg Schlägel had the suspicion entered in the Bergverleibuch under his nickname "Georg wag's fort". It was not far from the Wittigsthal hammer mill settlement , which has been part of Johanngeorgenstadt since 1935. In the 2nd quarter of 1680 she struck gold with 72 Mark 7 Lot 1 Quent silver (16.9 kg). The operation of the treasure trove never paid for itself, although a total of 220 kg of fine silver was mined up to 1716. The Georg (e) Wagsfort Stolln, set at 688.50 m above sea level, drained the mine field.

After the discovery of uranium, uranium ores were mined for the first time in Johanngeorgenstadt and the surrounding area in 1819 in order to use them for the manufacture of paint. In 1783 the mine was merged with the New Year's treasure trove and in 1828 with the Frisch-Glück treasure trove . In 1838 this mine field went up despite negative assessments of the ore reserves in the union Vereinigt Feld im Fastenberge .

In 1865 the mineral Fritzscheit was also discovered here.

Today an explanatory board reminds of the former location of the treasure trove and the hut house, which belonged to the Wittigsthal community until 1935. To the south of it is the Richard Stolln .
