Life

The son of pastor Andreas Helwig († 1705) dealt with herbs from an early age and attended school in his hometown. He switched to the Löbenichtsche Stadtschule in Königsberg and in 1684 moved to the University of Königsberg . He continued his studies in 1687 at the University of Wittenberg , then went to the University of Leipzig and the University of Jena . In Jena on October 11, 1688, he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. He studied pharmaceuticals with Georg Wolfgang Wedel and also taught privately about it.

However, according to his father's wish, he should complete a theological degree. Therefore he left Jena and continued his theological studies at the University of Erfurt . From here he went on an educational trip through Germany and to Venice. He returned to Jena, gave lectures and returned to his native town in November 1691 as a substitute for his father. There he took over from his father in 1705 and became provost and superintendent there in 1725 , taking over the supervision of the main church offices in Angerburg and Lötzen.

In 1738 his son Georg Aemilius Helwig was assigned to him as a substitute.

Helwig was married to Katharina, the daughter of Andreas Coneius. The marriage produced five daughters and four sons.

Because of his experience in natural history, especially herbal science, he was called the Prussian Pliny and the Prussian Tournefort . On August 31, 1709 the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences accepted him as a member.

Helwig introduced and discovered various types of plants. The genus Helwingia is named after him.
