Georg Capellen

Georg Capellen (born April 1, 1869 in Salzuflen , † January 19, 1934 in Hanover ) was a German composer and musicologist .

Capellen was born as the son of Ferdinand Capellen (1833–1911) and his wife Henriette, née Athenstaedt (1847–1899), in Salzuflen and attended grammar school there. His father ran the largest cigar factory in Lippe on the corner of Wenkenstrasse and Turmstrasse . Georg Capellen was the grandson of the former Mayor of Salzufler Friedrich Capellen (1792–1867).

In 1915 Georg Capellen married Marta Amalie Brandt († 1927).

Life

Georg Capellen studied in Berlin , Göttingen and Tübingen , first philosophy , later law ; in both subjects he passed the state examination . From 1898 he worked for two years in the Lippe civil service.

During this time, Capellen acquired his knowledge of music theory on an autodidactic basis. They led him to his profession, which he practiced as a composer as well as music critic and writer from 1906 in Osnabrück . After six years, Capellen moved to Cologne and only one year later to Munich . In 1914 he moved to Hanover , where he worked as a music advisor for the Niederdeutsche Zeitung from 1922 .

In his writings, Capellen dealt scientifically with problems of harmony , Richard Wagner , questions of voice guidance and exotic, especially Far Eastern music.
