Georg Christoph Gebhardi (born January 8, 1667 in Braunschweig , † December 19, 1693 in Greifswald ) was a German mathematician and historian.

Live and act

Georg Christoph Gebhardi was the son of Andreas Gebhardi, the pastor of Martinskirche in Braunschweig and Rosina Margareta Trost. The father died when Gebhardi was two years old. After six years of attending the Martin School in Braunschweig, Gebhardi taught the 16-year-old son of a ducal Braunschweig council as a private teacher. He accompanied him to the University of Jena , where he a. a. studied mathematics with Erhard Weigel .

After completing his studies, Gebhardi returned to his homeland and taught mathematics as a private teacher. When his private students to Darmstadt moved, he went with them and continued his studies at the local university and in Giessen , Heidelberg and Strasbourg continued. In Hamburg he deepened his knowledge of Hebrew with Esdras Edzardus .

At the urging of his brother Brandanus Heinrich , Gebhardi went to Greifswald in 1689 , passed the licentiate examination and received an extraordinary professorship for mathematics. In the following four years he gave a large number of courses. In 1693 he was offered a full professorship in mathematics in Halle . However, he fell so seriously ill on a trip to Braunschweig that he had to return to Greifswald, where he died a short time later.

Gebhardi wrote 27 scientific papers, most of which went to print. In addition to mathematical and astronomical topics, he also dealt with historical topics, such as the history of Pomerania and the history of the University of Greifswald .
