Georg Coates

Georg Coates (born December 15, 1853 in Luckenwalde , † October 19, 1924 in Berlin ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Georg Coate's father was an English factory owner. As a law student from 1875 he was a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn .

Coates lived in Japan for the first time in 1886/7 and then again in 1899–1902. During his second stay, he served as Consul General in Nagasaki.

He was the first envoy of Wilhelm II to Menelik II in Addis Ababa . Coates was a member of Friedrich Rosen's mission . Coates had gained his diplomatic experience at the embassies of the German Reich in Japan, Hong Kong and Siam . Georg Coates, was enthusiastic about the Ethiopian culture and reported on the customs and traditions in the palace of Meneliks II in a book.
