Georg Davidsohn

Georg Davidsohn (born August 20, 1872 in Gnesen , † July 15, 1942 in Berlin ) was a German SPD politician and journalist.

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Berlin in 1892, Davidsohn, who was of Jewish faith, studied philosophy in Berlin . In 1897/98 he did his military service with the 2nd Prussian Grenadier Regiment. From 1895 to 1905 he worked as a private teacher and translator, then he was Kurt Eisner's successor for five years as editor of the SPD newspaper Vorwärts . From 1911 he was Germany correspondent for the Brussels magazine Peuple . In addition, from 1903 to 1919 was the editor of the journal Der abstinent Arbeiter . In the First World War he was used in the grenadier troops, most recently in the rank of vice sergeant.

Davidsohn belonged to the Protection Association of German Writers , the Association of Workers' Press and the Reich Association of War Disabled and former combatants . In the latter was temporarily a board member. After 1920 he was still active as a journalist, his writings were a. a. published by the USPD 's Klassenkampf-Verlag , directed by Gustav Laukant . After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, David son was persecuted for political and racial reasons. He went into hiding during World War II.

Political party

Davidsohn had been a member of the SPD since the end of the 19th century. He was particularly committed to combating alcohol abuse. After he was not run as a candidate for the Reichstag election in 1920, he resigned from the SPD.

MP

Davidsohn was a member of the Reichstag from 1912 to 1918 , in which he represented the constituency of Liegnitz 1 ( Grünberg - Freystadt ). In 1919/20 he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly .

Public offices

After the November Revolution, Davidsohn gave a speech to thousands of listeners on November 12, 1918 on the Neuer Markt in Emden . He then became a member of the Emden Workers 'and Soldiers' Council for around three weeks .
