Georg Detharding (pharmacist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Detharding (born June 5, 1604 , † October 7, 1650 in Alt Stettin , Swedish-Pomerania ) was a German pharmacist.

Life

Georg Detharding came from the Detharding family , which produced doctors over seven generations. He was the son of the doctor Michael Georg Detharding , who practiced in Stargard , Stralsund and Stettin . Already in his youth he was interested in chemistry and alchemy . He completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist. In 1630 he married Dorothea Reisig (1602–1650), widow of the Szczecin pharmacist Joachim Bestert and daughter of the pharmacist Andreas Reisig. The marriage earned him the pharmacist's privilege. In 1633 he was also appointed royal Pomeranian personal and court pharmacist. In the urban politics of Szczecin he worked as a city judge and lay judge.

Around 1642 there was a dispute between Detharding and the Stettiner Johann Hintze, who produced a chemiatric drug " Aurum Potabile " according to a method described by the alchemist Johann Agricola in 1638 in comments on Popps' chemical medicine . Also involved on Agricola's side was his friend, the Dresden medical alchemist August Hauptmann (1607–1674). Detharding was of the opinion that this procedure, as well as other processes described in the “Comments”, would not be feasible. The dispute was conducted in several tracts on both sides and only ended with Detharding's death.

Georg Detharding died on October 7th, 1650, the funeral took place on October 25th in St. Mary's Church in Stettin . The funeral sermon was given by Jakob Fabricius .

His son of the same name Georg Detharding (1645-1712) became a doctor. He practiced in Stralsund and Güstrow and was appointed court medicus to Duke Gustav Adolf of Mecklenburg in 1694 . His grandson of the same name, Georg Detharding (1671–1747), also became a doctor.
