Life

Georg Feldhahn was born in Friesack in 1941. He was separated from his mother at the age of four months and placed in a children's home with his sister. His father died in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1942 . Foster parents from Buschow took the siblings in after the war. After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship as a tractor driver in a state- owned estate . In September 1959 he began his voluntary service with the border police, with which he committed himself for three years. He was first stationed in Groß-Glienicke and moved to the inner-city border in Berlin when the Wall was being built.

Until the day of his escape, his superiors and the Stasi did not notice him. According to MfS informers, he was said to have had a drink with two comrades before starting work. At around 9 p.m. he started his duty as a patrolman at the Massante Bridge on the Teltow Canal . At around 10 p.m., his guard leader instructed him to check a signal device. Instead of returning, he went to the bridge leading to West Berlin . There he fired a few shots from his submachine gun at the border police who were chasing him. Then his track was lost. The border police assumed that he could withdraw to the west.

His body was found on March 11, 1962 by a West Berlin customs officer at the Späthbrücke in Berlin-Neukölln . He was wearing the uniform of the border police. His face and head were destroyed beyond recognition. The autopsy of the water corpse revealed drowning as the cause of death. The circumstances of his death could only be clarified after German reunification . His sister only found out about his death after 1990.
