Georg Friederich von Bretten

Georg Friederich von Bretten (born December 15, 1610 in Stuttgart ; † May 8, 1674 ) was a lawyer and statesman. He represented the Electors of the Palatinate in important government affairs.

Life

Bretten was born in Stuttgart in 1610. He was orphaned when he was a child. In 1636 he moved to Heidelberg University and studied there for five years. He earned a doctorate in both rights (both secular and canon law).

From 1644 to 1645 he exercised in Frankfurt in practice. In 1646 he was appointed to the council by the dukes and count palatine near Rhine.

When the Electoral Palatinate , which had previously been conquered by Bavaria , was restored in 1648 as part of the Peace of Westphalia and received the newly created eighth electoral dignity , Georg Friederich von Bretten switched to the service of Karl I. Ludwig , Elector of the Palatinate . He supported the Elector in his ambitious plans to rebuild the Electoral Palatinate after the Thirty Years War . In 1654 he accompanied his prince to the Reichstag in Regensburg and sometimes represented him there when the elector was absent. The Reichstag, which lasted until 1654, achieved the establishment of the resolutions of the Peace of Westphalia in the imperial constitution as well as an extensive amendment of the imperial court order.

In 1660 Georg Friederich von Bretten said goodbye at the age of 50. On the recommendation of Karl I Ludwig, he was raised to the simple hereditary nobility by Emperor Leopold I and given an imperial nobility diploma. He spent his old age on the family estate in Breisgau .
