Marpurg represented a rationalist movement and was probably the first to implement the Copernican turn in an Estonian-language popular book (1802) , that is, to represent the sun as the center of the solar system. With his other books, written in the South Estonian language variant, he became one of the founders of early secular prose in Estonia.

Later, through contact with Juliane von Krüdener , among other things, he came under pietistic influence and hardly published any secular books.
