Georg Haber

Georg Haber ( September 21, 1938 in Vienna - February 19, 2019 there ) was an Austrian communications engineer . He was a survivor of the Holocaust and from 1991 to 2010 director of the Jewish Museum in Vienna.

life and work

Haber emigrated with his parents to Palestine in 1939, where he attended elementary school. In 1948 the family returned to Austria. From 1956 he completed his training as a communications engineer at the Vienna University of Technology. He graduated with the title Dipl.-Ing. from. Until 1971 he worked in the family business, the Haber Brothers department store . From 1971 to 1991 he worked for Henkel Austria. From 1980, Georg Haber volunteered in the Israelite Community , especially for the agendas of social affairs, integration and culture. He was entrusted with functions in the editorial committee of the municipality and in the culture commission. From 1991 to 2010 he was responsible for the commercial affairs of the Jewish Museum in Vienna.

On the occasion of the award of the Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna , City Councilor for Culture Andreas Mailath-Pokorny characterized him as a “man of history, technology, religions, culture and business”. As a man “from the very beginning” of the Jewish Museum, he was also responsible for its high standard.

On February 19, 2019, Georg Haber was hit by a van while being pushed back in downtown Vienna and was fatally injured. He died at the scene of the accident.
