Georg Hellmesberger junior (born January 27, 1830 in Vienna ; † November 12, 1852 in Hanover ) was an Austrian composer and violinist .

Life

Like his two years older brother Josef , Georg also received his first musical training on violin and piano from his father, Georg Hellmesberger senior , who was a violin professor at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde .

At the age of 13 he already played together with Josef at concerts of the Musikverein, and soon they were also giving their own with the participation of the court opera orchestra and other prominent musicians. Despite successful talent trials as a violinist in Vienna and on extensive concert tours (with brother and father) to Germany and England, Georg soon turned entirely to composing. He had already received lessons in this from Ludwig Rotter , and his first opera was premiered in Graz in 1848.

In 1850, when he was 20 years old, he was appointed director of vaudeville and ballet music at the court theater in Hanover. A severe lung disease soon forced him to take a cure, but this only had temporary success. After returning to Hanover, he was appointed court conductor , but after a short time - only 22 years old - succumbed to his ailment.

In addition to numerous operas such as B. The Favorite (1846), The Day of Engagement (1846), The Guarantee (1848), The Two Queens (1851), Fiesco (1848) etc. created Georg Hellmesberger jun. also individual symphonic and chamber music works.

It rests in the Hietzinger Friedhof (group 15, number 4 D) in Vienna.
