August Prinzhofer
August Prinzhofer (born September 12, 1817 in St. Veit an der Glan , † August 4, 1885 in Bad Steinerhof near Kapfenberg ) was an Austrian painter and lithographer .
Life
August Prinzhofer comes from a long -established Carinthian family and even as a child showed an amazing talent for drawing . He studied law in Vienna and Padua . From 1844 he worked at a civil court in Vienna, besides which he also worked as a successful portraitist . In 1854 he gave up his legal career to devote himself entirely to portraiture.
Along with Joseph Kriehuber , Franz Eybl and Eduard Kaiser , he was one of the artists who were responsible for the heyday of portrait lithography in Vienna from 1830–1860.
His lithographic work includes more than 500 portraits (including by Hector Berlioz , Ludwig von Benedek , Ignaz Franz Castelli , Archduke Johann , Lajos Kossuth , Albert Lortzing , Alois Negrelli , Pius IX. , Johann Ladislaus Pyrker , Johann Nestroy ).
In the 1850s photography became more widespread and portrait lithography went completely out of fashion around 1860. In 1861 Prinzhofer took up his permanent residence in Graz, where he devoted himself increasingly to oil painting for portraits and watercolors for miniatures .
