Georg Henning Behrens (born June 5, 1662 in Goslar , † January 11, 1712 in Nordhausen ) was a German author and doctor.

Life

Behrens studied from 1680 at the universities of Erfurt and Jena. After receiving his doctorate in Erfurt in 1688, he settled as a doctor in Nordhausen . He was there initially deputy and from 1706 acting city physician .

He is still known today through his travel description Hercynia Curiosa or Curiöser Hartz-Wald […] from 1703. The successful work was reprinted in 1712, 1720 and 1899 and translated into English in 1730. Written in the typical Baroque style, the book is the first attempt at a detailed literary study of the Harz Mountains , whereby Behrens relies above all on legendary, sometimes superstitious traditions. He deals in detail, for example, with the Rammelsberg , Gröningen Castle (where he drinks from Duke Heinrich Julius' giant wine barrel ) and the Rübeland Baumannshöhle .
