George II (Württemberg-Mömpelgard)
Georg II of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (born October 5, 1626 in Mömpelgard ; † June 1, 1699 ibid) was Duke of Württemberg-Mömpelgard .
Life
Georg II was a son of Duke Ludwig Friedrich von Württemberg-Mömpelgard (1586–1631) from his second marriage to Anna Eleonora (1602–1685), daughter of Count Johann Casimir von Nassau-Gleiberg (1593–1602). In 1662 he succeeded his older brother Leopold Friedrich as Duke of Württemberg-Mömpelgard.
In 1676 Mömpelgard was occupied by French troops from Louis XIV , who tried, as part of his policy of conquest, to bring Württemberg possessions on the left bank of the Rhine under his control. George fled his country; In 1684 he was given the opportunity to return, but refused to recognize the suzerainty of France. The country was therefore administered by Georg's cousin Friedrich Karl until 1698 . After his death Georg finally returned to Mömpelgard and died the following year.
