Georg Julius Ribbentrop
Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Philipp August Julius Ribbentrop (born May 2, 1798 in Bremerlehe near Wesermünde , † April 13, 1874 in Göttingen ) was a German legal scholar.
Life
Georg Julius Ribbentrop came from a Brunswick family; his father, who died as a tax director in the Hanoverian service, was the son of a Braunschweig chamber councilor. He himself attended grammar schools in Stade , Braunschweig and Kassel , initially studied philology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 1814 and then began studying law in Berlin in the summer of 1816 . Before the end of this year he came back to Göttingen and in March 1817 became an accessist at the royal university library there. In 1818/19 he lived again in Berlin for study purposes and made friends with Friedrich Carl von Savigny .
On September 25, 1819, Ribbentrop received his doctorate in law in Göttingen and completed his habilitation in 1820 as a private lecturer at the university there. On February 18, 1822 he became associate assessor of the Spruchkollegium and on April 26, 1823 associate professor for Roman law at the University of Göttingen, whereupon he resigned from the library. Promoted to full professor of Roman law on February 4, 1832, he held this teaching post until the end of his life. He publicly supported the Göttingen Seven and championed a university business that was exempt from state control.
Although not very fruitful from a literary point of view, Ribbentrop was important as an academic teacher and acquired the reputation of an astute lawyer through his monograph On the Teaching of the Correal Obligations (Göttingen 1831). In his direction, Ribbentrop was a strict and correct representative of the older historical school.
In 1844 Ribbentrop was appointed court counselor and in 1854 a secret councilor of justice. He was awarded the Prussian Order of the Crown, Second Class, in August 1869. On April 13, 1874, he died of a stroke in Göttingen at the age of almost 76 .
