Georg Lehnig (born March 15, 1907 in Lichtenberg near Berlin, † March 28, 1945 in Brandenburg-Görden ) was a German communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Georg Lehnig learned to be a mechanic. He lived at Wönnichstraße 105 in Lichtenberg and worked as a carpenter and mechanic. As a young man he joined the Communist Youth Association of Germany , in 1927 he became a member of the KPD . Lehnig stayed in the Soviet Union for nine months . After his return, his party deployed him as an instructor and courier in East Prussia and Lithuania . In 1933 he was arrested in Königsberg and taken to a concentration camp. Lehnig was released in 1935 for lack of evidence and worked at the Oberspree cable works, a subsidiary of AEG . He continued his resistance by distributing leaflets aimed at foreign forced laborers .

Lehnig belonged to the resistance group around Anton Saefkow . His son Horst from his marriage to Cläre Lehnig (1904–1991) deserted from the Wehrmacht . The resistance fighter Paul Hinze , wanted by the Gestapo , was given shelter in his apartment by Lehnig. In April 1944 both were caught.

On January 11, 1945, Lehnig was sentenced to death by the “ People's Court ”. He was executed in the Brandenburg prison in 1945 and buried in the Friedrichsfelde central cemetery. A stone in the grave complex for the victims and persecuted of the Nazi regime commemorates him.

Honors

A street in Berlin-Lichtenberg , which until then was called Stichstraße 3, was named after Georg Lehnig in 1962. A memorial plaque attached to his former home in 2007 commemorates him.
