Georg Litzel (partly also Lizel ; born November 23, 1694 in Ulm , † March 22, 1761 in Speyer ), also known by his pseudonym Megalissus , was a German Lutheran clergyman, hymn researcher and linguist.

Life

Georg Litzel studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Strasbourg and Jena . From 1735 he was pastor in Steinenkirch (Göppingen district), but was dismissed in 1736. In 1737 he received a position as vice principal at the grammar school in Speyer, which he held until his death.

Litzel was a bitter opponent of everything Catholic , both on a theological and linguistic level.

Quote

The Catholics are unhappy that they are mostly produced in landscapes in which a rough language is in use. But there are people living in every landscape, some of whom speak better according to the rough dialect, some worse. Parents do not usually look to which of the two they are submitting their children to. It is equally important to them to accept maidservants that they may have whatever language they like. They let their children run around among the servants and play with other children from whom they do not get used to a good dialect. Yes, noble and learned parents often speak like the rough peasants themselves. (quoted from Adolf Socin )
