Georg Müller (preacher)

Georg Müller (also Jurgen Muller , Georgius Mollerus ; Jorgen Moller , * about 1570 probably Tallinn , † June 30 . Jul / 10. July  1608 greg. In Tallinn) was a teacher and priest in Tallinn, of which the first extensive Estonian Text collection is handed down.

Career

Little is known about Müller's origins. But since he was sent to school in Lübeck in 1587 at the expense of the city of Tallinn , it seems plausible that he also came from this city and was probably born in the early 1570s. It is not known whether he is of German or Estonian descent and what his mother tongue was. As a scholarship holder of the city of Tallinn, he had committed to return, which took place in 1595. He was then a brief teacher in Tallinn and around 1600 probably at the school in Rakvere .

In 1601 he became assistant preacher at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Tallinn and thus successor to Balthasar Rüssow . He died just seven years later.

In 1884 the Tallinn city archivist Theodor Schiemann discovered 34 booklets with 39 sermons dated from 1600 to 1606, which were mainly written in Estonian, but also contained longer passages, insertions, explanations and individual words in German. It was quickly recognized that it was an important source for the Estonian language, especially since at that time the first part of Heinrich Stahl's Hand- und Haußbuch (1632) was still considered to be the oldest Estonian print. But even later, older finds did not reach the scope of the material in this collection of sermons.

Müller's sermons are valuable in terms of linguistic history, but also interesting from a cultural-historical point of view. They give a lot of information about the circumstances of the time ( war , bad harvests, plague ), on the other hand, the preacher criticizes the poor singing of his congregation several times. While the titles are in German, the text is usually Estonian, and the sermons were delivered in this language. If there are German or Latin passages, they only served the preacher as a reminder. The manuscript was most likely not planned for print, although later sources speak of a (so far not found) manuscript by Müller that Müller had given for printing.
