Georg Maliniak ( Polish: Jerzy Maliniak ; born December 1, 1895 in Warsaw ; † June 23, 1949 in London ) was a conductor, master of studies and solo répétiteur of Polish origin.

Life

Maliniak studied music theory with Franz Schreker in 1916 / 17-1919 / 20 and in the Kapellmeisterschule with Franz Schalk, in the last year of study also with Ferdinand Löwe at the then State Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. According to Soma Morgenstern, he was also a student of Alban Berg . First he worked in Freiburg i. Br. , In Graz and Reichenberg , at the National Theater Osijek and at the Frankfurt Opera During his work at the Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt a. M. he worked as Kapellmeister and solo répétiteur, and at the same time as a teacher at the Frankfurt Opera School , the so-called Hoch Conservatory . In 1929 he and his colleague Krauss moved on to the Vienna State Opera .

Georg Maliniak was appointed to the Vienna State Opera in 1930 to rehearse Alban Berg's Wozzeck performance under the direction of Clemens Krauss . Clemens Krauss called him his "noble répétiteur". The Vienna State Opera also signed Maliniak, and his contract has been renewed several times. He became a member of the court opera and in the thirties also worked at the Salzburg Festival . In particular, he also wrote the translation of the opera Der Jahrmarkt von Sorotschinzy by Modest Mussorgsky , which was performed by Lothar Wallerstein in the spring of 1935 at the Vienna State Opera. Maliniak was also in contact with the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski and tried to bring his operas to prominence in German-speaking countries.

In 1938, it was enforced at the Vienna State Opera that all “civil servants who are not of Aryan descent should be retired”. Georg Maliniak was also dismissed as part of these layoffs. Georg Maliniak and Clemens Krauss knew each other from their time together in Vienna and Graz . This friendship, which Georg Maliniak had with Clemens Krauss and his wife Viorica Ursuleac , saved Maliniak and his family. Krauss was first musical director, later also artistic director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and well connected at home and abroad, and knew many people in London. These contacts helped Maliniak and his family to flee to England. Maliniak did not find a permanent position there. It is known that from 1946 he occasionally cooperated with the conductor Alberto Erede as assistant conductor . He worked in several opera productions such as La Bohème 1946–1948, Don Pasquale 1946–1948, Don Giovanni 1947–1949, Falstaff 1948 and Il barbiere di Siviglia 1949 with the New London Opera Company and had contact with important musicians who had fled from Austria in London , Germany and Italy. Georg Maliniak committed suicide in 1949.

family

Georg Maliniak married Gerda Ellen Maliniak, née Rissler, in 1928 (born March 12, 1903 in Berlin, † April 26, 1984 in London). From this marriage a daughter was born.
