Georg Pictorius or Georgius Pictorius or Pictorius Villingensis , latinized from Georg Maler (* around 1500 in Villingen , † 1569 in Bärenthal ), was a German doctor and author of the Renaissance .

Life

Georg Maler was the son of the butcher Michael Maler, first attended a Franciscan monastery school and then studied philosophy and liberal arts at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , where he latinized his surname Maler to Pictorius . In 1529 he was a teacher at the Freiburg Latin School, which he also headed a little later. He then studied medicine and obtained his doctorate in 1535. From 1540, Pictorius worked in Ensisheim as a medical officer for the Upper Austrian government and as a court doctor . After he had already submitted his first philosophical writings in Freiburg, he wrote numerous other writings, especially in Ensisheim. One of the most important of his around 50 works is the Badenfahrt booklet ( Baderbüchlin ) from 1560, in which he describes 38 baths. He condemned witches in his book on sorcery: if witches did not burn, the number of these furies would increase immensely that no one would be safe. His gynecological work Frauenzimmer provides information on questions of cosmetics and odor removal as well as on epilation in the area of the female breast.
