Georg Potente
Georg Potente (born February 13, 1876 in Kassel , † April 27, 1945 in Potsdam ) was a German gardener . He is considered to be the founder of scientific garden monument preservation in German-speaking countries.
life and work
Georg Potente worked as a gardener in Sanssouci for 36 years , from 1902 until the abdication of Wilhelm II in 1918 as a court gardener, from then on as a gardening inspector and later as a gardening director. From 1920 onwards, when restoring Lenné's park concept for Charlottenhof Palace, he developed approaches to monument conservation for horticulture . From 1927 he also implemented these approaches in the park of Sanssouci.
On April 3, 1911, Potente was accepted into the Potsdam Freemason Lodge Minerva , which was part of the Masonic Order . He was a personal friend of the last state grand master of the order before the ban by the National Socialists in 1935, Kurt von Heeringen . After Heeringen's death in 1937, he created his grave slab, the only grave monument with Masonic symbolism on the Bornstedt cemetery .
In 1938 he left the service in the palace administration, and from now on worked as a freelance garden designer, among others with architects such as Werner March for the Yugoslav embassy in Berlin (1939-40) and the waterways directorate in Potsdam (1940-42).
In 1945 he himself put an end to his life when the Red Army marched into Potsdam. Together with 53 other dead, Potente was provisionally buried in the connection between the New Garden and the Pfingstberg, at the corner of Mirbachstrasse / Albrechtstrasse (Am Neuen Garten) and reburied in an anonymous communal grave in the New Cemetery in Potsdam around 1957 .
