Georg Renatus Solta (born April 18, 1915 in Vienna ; † May 2, 2005 ) was an Austrian linguist , Indo-Europeanist and university professor.

Life

Georg Renatus Solta, born in Vienna, spent his entire school days in Linz . On June 13, 1934, he passed the high school diploma there with distinction. In autumn 1934 he began his studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna . In addition to comparative Indo-European linguistics, he also studied Classical Philology and Romance Studies . On July 1, 1938, before his doctorate , he began his university career as a librarian at the Institute for Indo-European Studies. From July 1, 1940, he switched to the role of assistant.

Professors Paul Kretschmer , Wilhelm Havers and Albin Lesky were of great importance for his further career . The topic of his dissertation was " Old Italian Place Name Studies ". On July 20, 1939, he received his doctorate in philosophy. According to Soltas, his Jewish teacher Norbert Jokl , who was murdered in June 1942, was his most important role model. Jokl was one of the founders of Albanian Studies .

After a break due to illness, Solta was able to continue his career as a research assistant from 1949. His habilitation in 1953 (on the position of Armenian within the Indo-European languages) initially did not change anything. It was not until 1955 that he became an assistant at the Indo-European Institute again, in 1967 he was appointed associate professor, and in 1973 he was appointed full professor of Indo-European linguistics.

In 1984 he was elected a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Solta, whose character, according to consistent statements of his colleagues and students, was characterized by the highest personal humility and integrity, died on May 2, 2005.
