Georg Schmidt (diplomat)

Georg Schmidt (* 1963 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to Thailand since November 2018 .

Life

Georg Schmidt studied history and economics in Hong Kong as well as East Asian studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London .

In 1995 Schmidt joined the Foreign Service . After completing his preparatory service for the Foreign Service, he worked in 1996 as a consultant for Asia, Africa and Latin America at the Federal Chancellery in Bonn . From 1997 to 1999 he worked as a consultant in the office of the State Minister in the Foreign Office . This was followed by assignments in the embassy in Tokyo (2000 to 2003) and as deputy head of the embassy in Bamako ( Mali ).

After the tsunami at the end of 2004 , Schmidt headed the office for NGO cooperation at the German Embassy in Colombo ( Sri Lanka ) in 2005 .

In 2006 he moved to the office of the Federal President , where he was initially deputy head and, from 2009, head of the department for Asia, Australia, Africa and development cooperation. After eight years in the office of the Federal President, Schmidt moved back to the Foreign Office in 2014 and was appointed regional representative for sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel . In November 2018, Schmidt was sent to Bangkok ( Thailand ) as an ambassador .

Schmidt is married and has a daughter.
