Live and act

Leopold Happisch, the first managing director of TVN (Tourist Association Die Naturfreunde), NF ( Naturfreunde Austria ) and NFI (Naturfreunde Internationale), describes Georg Schmiedel in his notes as a born and called educator. On his Sunday hikes, which he mostly undertook in the company of his long-time friend, the businessman Katz, he met many loners with whom he started talking about this and that. Then the idea matured to bring nature lovers together out of passion for relaxation, mutual instruction and a fruitful exchange of views. His traveling companion Katz was enthusiastic about this plan. In the spring of 1895, Schmiedel went to work. He placed the following advertisement in the Wiener Arbeiter-Zeitung on Friday, March 22nd, the following Saturday and on Sunday:

"Friends of nature are invited to found a tourist group to send their address to the expedition at Nature 2080-"

Schmiedel received around 30 letters and cards for his advertisement. One of these letters came from Alois Rohrauer (metal worker), later chairman of the Austrian Friends of Nature and President of the World Association. Josef Rohrauer, student and later in a leading position of the Friends of Nature, and Karl Renner , student, later State Chancellor of the 1st Republic and first Federal President of Austria after the Second World War.
