Georg Schneider (politician, 1909)

Georg Schneider (born March 25, 1909 in Saarbrücken , † June 10, 1970 in Jena ) was a German biologist and university professor in Jena.

Life

Schneider came from a working class family ; his father was a tailor . After attending elementary school and a secondary school in Gotha , he studied biology and education at Jena University . He was also involved in workers' sports . In 1929 he joined the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) and in 1930 the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). In 1931 he went to the Soviet Union , where he worked as a teacher and in 1936 as a research associate of the emigrated from Germany developmental biologists Julius Schaxel at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . From 1943 he taught German prisoners of war at an anti-fascist school .

After the National Socialist regime had been eliminated, he returned to Germany as a member of the Ackermann Group and became politically active in Saxony . When the SMAD took over command from the Americans in Thuringia , Walter Ulbricht appointed him as Thuringian KPD district leader. His activity caused u. a. the removal of the social democrat Hermann Brill from the head of government. Due to his organizational incompetence and his doctrinal behavior, he was “steered” into Jena university operations in autumn 1945. In 1947 he became head of the " Ernst Haeckel House ". He was also committed to the re-establishment and reissue of the magazine " Urania ". At the beginning of 1949 he dismissed the reform pedagogue Peter Petersen . Schneider had already developed into an advocate of the theories of Michurin and Lysenko in the Soviet Union . That earned him a university professorship in 1951 . In 1959 he lost this position and went to Moscow in the diplomatic service of the GDR , from which he returned in 1962.

Between 1950 and 1954 Schneider sat for the SED in the People's Chamber of the GDR, then until 1958 in the Gera district assembly.

Schneider died in a car accident in 1970 .
