Georg Thym

Georg Thym (* around 1520 in Zwickau ; † December 21, 1560 in Wittenberg ) was a German pedagogue, poet and author. He has several other forms of the name, including Georg Thymus and Georg Klee .

Life

Thym first attended school in his hometown and in 1540 moved to the University of Wittenberg . Here, in addition to Martin Luther, he also met Philipp Melanchthon , with whom he remained connected throughout his life. After completing his undergraduate studies, Thym took a position as a sub-teacher in Magdeburg in 1544, where he was among other things a colleague of Martin Agricola .

Soon afterwards he switched to the school in Zerbst and, after having obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in Wittenberg , took the position of rector of the school in his hometown of Zwickau in 1548. He couldn't stay there long, however. Therefore he followed a call to Goslar in 1551 (alternatively 1549) , took over the office of schoolmaster in Wernigerode in 1554 (alternatively 1550) and returned the following year to Wittenberg, where he was accepted into the philosophical faculty of the Wittenberg Academy in October. According to another source, he stayed in Wernigerode until 1558 before becoming a professor in Wittenberg.

Here he held private lectures, continued his studies and founded a private school. Thym has distinguished himself above all as an author of school books, grammatical writings, and as an author of German and Latin poems. In addition to a handbook of Christian doctrine in verse, his legends about Henry the Lion emerged in verse.
