Georg Vogel (diplomat)

Georg Vogel (born January 15, 1903 in Hamburg , † April 30, 1992 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German diplomat during the National Socialist era and in the Federal Republic.

Career

During his law studies, Vogel became a member of the Franconia Freiburg fraternity in 1921 . Vogel worked in the state administration and in the Reich finance administration in Hamburg between 1928 and 1934. After the handover of power to the National Socialists , Vogel became a member of the SS on November 2, 1933 (membership number 138.133). On April 20, 1939 he was promoted to Obersturmführer . Vogel became a member of the NSDAP on January 1, 1937 .

In 1934 he switched to the Foreign Service and held positions in Prague, London and from 1938 to April 6, 1941 in Athens. After the Greek defeat in World War II, he returned to Athens with the representative of the Reich for Greece and stayed there until October 1943. He then worked with Ambassador Karl Ritter in the Foreign Ministry.

After the end of the war he was a district judge in Hesse from 1945 to 1949 , nothing is known about his denazification . Vogel witnessed the defense in the Wilhelmstrasse trial in 1948 . After the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, he worked in the Federal Ministry for Marshall Plan Affairs and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation from 1949 to 1955 , where he was Head of Department K (Legal, Cabinet and Parliamentary Affairs, from 1954: Legal and Cabinet Affairs) from 1953 to 1955 ). From 1954–1955 he was head of the FOA mission in Washington and then returned to the Foreign Service. From 1956 to 1958 he was Consul General or (from 1958) Ambassador in Salisbury (Rhodesia), from 1958 to 1961 Ambassador in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), from 1961 to 1964 in Quito (Ecuador) and from 1964 to 1968 in Caracas (Venezuela) ).
