Georg Weig , SVD (Chinese name: Wei Changlu) (born December 14, 1883 in Beratzhausen ; † October 3, 1941 in Qingdao ) was a German Roman Catholic Bishop and Apostolic Administrator of Qingdao in China .

Life

Georg Weig entered the order of the Steyler Missionaries on October 31, 1906 . He was ordained a priest on February 10, 1907. On March 18, 1925 he was appointed Apostolic Prefect of the newly established Apostolic Prefecture of Qingdao , the former German Tsingtao . With the elevation of the prefecture to the Apostolic Vicariate , Weig was appointed Apostolic Vicar and at the same time titular Bishop of Antandrus on June 15, 1928 . On September 23, 1928, he received the episcopal ordination by the Apostolic Delegate for China and later Cardinal Celso Costantini . The coconecrator was the Vicar Apostolic of Southern Shantung , Augustin Henninghaus SVD.

During his tenure, St. Michael's Cathedral was built and consecrated on October 28, 1934, where he was also buried. The cathedral was damaged by the Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution, but was able to reopen in 1981. He was succeeded on November 10, 1942 by the later Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken-sin .

Exstitit vigilans fidelium pastor animarium juventutis sudiosae assiduus fautor. Missionariorum suorum dux prudens providusque pater.

  • There is also a memorial plaque on the house where he was born in Beratzhausen, commemorating Georg Weig.
