Augustin Henninghaus SVD (born September 11, 1862 in Menden (Sauerland) , † July 20, 1939 in Yanzhou , Republic of China ) was a German missionary and bishop .

Life

Origin and education

After attending secondary school in his hometown and two years of private training, he entered the Steyler Missionary Order (Societas Verbi Divini / SVD) on October 11, 1879 and was ordained a priest on May 30, 1885 .

China missionary

Then he was sent in 1886 by Arnold Janssen , the founder and first general superior of the Steyler missionaries to the Steyler Mission in Shantung, China, where he has since worked as a Catholic missionary.

Vicar Apostolic of Yenchowfu ( Yanzhou )

In 1904, he was by Pope Pius X as a missionary bishop of Yenchowfu and titular bishop of Hypaepa appointed. The bishop retired in 1935 and lived in China until his death in 1939.

Order founder

In 1910, the Apostolic Prefect founded the Sisters of the Oblates of the Holy Family . The nuns, however, venerate Fr. Josef Freinademetz SVD as their actual founder, because Freinademetz had already collected the first virgin catechists in the mid-1890s and wrote the rule for virgins for them in 1904. From the group of virgin catechists, the P. Freinademetz had trained the first sisters of the Institute of the Oblates of the Holy Family, which Henninghaus had established. Bishop Henninghaus appointed the Steyler missionary sister Juliana, Emma Hansen (1876–1911) (1876–1911), who died in 1911 of typhus as the first novice master Thereupon Sr. Odila, Maria Anna Fasselt (1883–1952) was appointed novice master. She shaped the first generation of the Oblates. Bishop Henninghaus commissioned his brother Fr. Peter Röser (1862–1944) with the elaboration of the religious constitutions Bishop made him director of the community of sisters in Shantung ( Shandong ) and Kansu ( Gan see below , China), as well as in Taiwan , the sisters work among lepers, run orphanages and do social work; the order currently has around 200 sisters.

First biographer of St. Joseph Freinademetz

Bishop Henninghaus published in 1920 in the publishing house of the Catholic Mission in Yenchowfu Yanzhou the life picture of the China missionary, Fr. Josef Freinademetz, who died in the reputation of holiness and whom he had come to know and appreciate from twenty-two years of joint missionary work in the Apostolic Vicariate of Yenchowfu. His 648-page biography is still the classic among the numerous biographies on Freinademetz.
