St. Michael (Qingdao)
The Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael in Qingdao , a port city in Shandong Province in the east of the People's Republic of China , was built from 1932. The diocese of Tsingtao was a mission area of the Steyler missionaries . Under the out Beratzhausen originating Apostolic Vicar Georg Weig Cathedral was built (1883-1941).
history
The church, consecrated to the Archangel Michael , was built according to plans by the architect and Father Alfred Fräbel SVD . As construction manager of the Cathedral was Arthur Bialucha (1880-1947) worked. During the Cultural Revolution , the church was desecrated and damaged. For a long time it served as a car repair shop. From 1982 it could be used again as a place of worship.
architecture
The church with two 55 meter high west towers is based on the Rhenish Romanesque style. The three- aisled building has a transept over a cross-shaped floor plan and a raised choir with ambulatory. There are sacristies on both sides of the choir . There are three arched portals to the town square . The main portal has tiered walls and romanized architectural sculptures. The wall between the five-story towers is structured with panels and friezes as well as a rose window .
Inside, the coffered ceiling has a three-dimensional profile with stucco . The pillars in the nave are fluted .
