Georg Wimmer (agronomist)

Georg Wimmer (born June 2, 1865 in Oschersleben , † May 17, 1945 in Bernburg ) was a German agricultural chemist . He worked for five decades at the Anhalt Research Station in Bernburg and primarily researched nutrient deficiencies in cultivated plants.

Live and act

Georg Wimmer attended grammar school in Bernburg , then in Hanover , where he passed his school leaving examination in 1884 . He then studied mathematics and chemistry at the Technical University of Hanover and agriculture at the University of Halle (Saale) . In Halle he specialized in the field of soil bacteriology . In 1887 he joined as an assistant in by Hermann Hellriegel led Anhaltische experimental station a Bernburg. Here he took part in Hellriegel's groundbreaking research to elucidate the nitrogen diet of legumes. After Hellriegels death, Wimmer mainly dealt with nutrient deficiencies in sugar beets and other crops. In 1904 he did his doctorate with Julius Kühn at the University of Halle (Saale) with the dissertation “ Contribution to the knowledge of nitrification bacteria ”. In 1913 he was appointed professor .

From 1923 Wimmer was deputy director of the Anhalt Research Station in Bernburg and its director from 1930 to 1938 . His " Memorandum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Anhalt Research Station in Bernburg 1882-1932 " (1932), which he created together with other employees, is significant in terms of scientific history . The bibliography published there provides a comprehensive overview of Wimmer's decades of research and that of his predecessors and colleagues in Bernburg. In 1937 Wimmer paid tribute to Hermann Hellriegel's scientific life's work in a noteworthy article in the journal “Der Forschungsdienst”.
