George of Struve
Georg Otto Hermann Struve (born December 17 . Jul / 29. December 1886 greg. In Pulkovo in St. Petersburg ; † 10. June 1933 in Berlin ) was a Baltic German astronomer from the great scientist Dynasty. He dealt primarily with bodies of the solar system , in particular with comets and minor planets as well as the system of Saturn's rings and moons .
Life
Struve was the son of the astronomer Hermann von Struve . From 1905 he studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Heidelberg . Struve continued his studies at the University of Berlin , where he successfully completed his doctorate in 1910 .
From 1911 he worked as an assistant at the observatory in Bonn , at the Berlin observatory and at the Bergedorf observatory near Hamburg . In the following year Struve became a permanent employee at the observatory of the Imperial Navy in Wilhelmshaven . During the First World War he was promoted to corvette captain at the observatory .
In 1919 he went to the observatory Babelsberg and habilitated in 1924 Professor . Extensive study trips to the observatories in Johannesburg (1926) and Chicago (Illinois) (1928) followed. Struve died in Berlin at the age of only 47.
