Hermann von Struve
Karl Hermann Struve (born September 21 . Jul / 3. October 1854 greg. In Pulkovo in St. Petersburg ; † 12. August 1920 in Herrenalb , Black Forest ) was a Baltic German astronomer and mathematician.
Life
Struve was the son of the astronomer Otto von Struve and the brother of the astronomer Ludwig von Struve .
From 1872 Struve studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Dorpat (now Tartu in Estonia ). After this study he got a job at the observatory in Pulkowo in 1877 . From here he went to further studies in Paris , Strasbourg , Berlin and Graz and completed these studies in 1882 with a doctorate in Dorpat.
At the beginning of the following year, Struve was appointed Pulkovo's assistant astronomer. In 1890 he was promoted to senior astronomer. In 1895 he was offered a position at the University of Königsberg and was appointed head of the Königsberg observatory that same year .
In 1903 Struve was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society . In 1904 he accepted the position of director of the Berlin observatory . Under his direction, this was expanded considerably and moved to Babelsberg in 1913 . In 1904 he was given the title of Geh. Government Council awarded. The Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin accepted him as a full member, from 1911 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
The theory of the movement of Saturn's satellites , which is still valid today, goes back to Hermann von Struve.
In mathematics, the struve function is named after him.
The astronomer Georg von Struve is his son.
