Georg of Mecklenburg (1528–1552)

Georg von Mecklenburg (born February 23, 1528 , † July 20, 1552 near Frankfurt am Main ) was the third son of Duke Albrecht VII of Mecklenburg.

From 1537 he was brought up at the court of Duchess Elisabeth of Braunschweig with her son Erich the Younger (II.) , And with this he joined the auxiliary troops that Moritz von Sachsen led to Emperor Charles V in 1546 . Georg probably took part in the latter's campaign during the Schmalkaldic War against the Elector of Saxony and in the Battle of Mühlberg , but he is not mentioned until 1550, in which year he and Moritz in the siege of the interim because of refused acceptance declared city of Magdeburg . Soon after the siege began, which lasted from September 16, 1550 to November 9, 1551, Georg was captured in 1550 when the Magdeburg soldiers fell out and was only released after the city had surrendered.

Georg stayed with Moritz, with this he joined the prince uprising against the emperor and at the beginning of 1551 he held the city of Wolmirstedt . With the other princes of the prince uprising he was in front of Augsburg , where they gathered, attended the siege of this city from April 1st to 5th and then moved with them to Tyrol , where on May 19th he fortified that of the imperial ones Ehrenberger Klause stormed. Through his bravery he contributed significantly to the quick end of the campaign, which the Passau Treaty concluded . He then took part in the siege of the city of Frankfurt am Main , which began on July 17th . On July 20th, a cannonball fired from the city hit him and tore his right leg away; as a result of this wound, he died the same day. His body was prepared for the transfer to Mecklenburg and his entrails were buried in Hanau , "but according to wittenberg custom". He found his final resting place on August 7th in the Holy Blood Chapel, the burial place of the Mecklenburg Dukes, in the Schwerin Cathedral .
