Life

Elliott studied at Queen's University (Kingston) (Master's degree 1966) and at the University of Toronto, where he received his doctorate in 1969 with Israel Halperin ( Derivations of Matroid C * Algebras ). As a post-doctoral student he was at Queen's University and the University of British Columbia and in 1971/72 at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1972 he was an assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen . From 1979 to 1985 he was also adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa and from 1984 at the University of Toronto, where he is now a full professor.

He deals with operator algebras such as C * algebras and Von Neumann algebras and their classification as well as their applications in quantum field theory and quantum statistics and with non-commutative geometry (in the sense of Alain Connes ). The classification of the AF-C * algebras by means of their K 0 groups is known as the Elliott Theorem .

He was visiting scholar and visiting professor at the University of Newcastle (1974), at the Australian National University (1984), at the MSRI (1985), the University of Warwick (1982), the Center de Recherches Mathématiques in Montreal (1991), the University of New South Wales , at University College Swansea (1993) and has been a Senior Distinguished Member of the Fields Institute since 1996 .

In 1996 he received the CRM Fields PIMS Prize , in 1998 the Jeffery Williams Prize and in 1999 the John L. Synge Award . He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1982 and has been a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society since 2012 . In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich ( The classification problem of amenable C * algebras ). From 1996 to 1998 he was a Killam Fellow.

He has been married to the math professor (Queen's University) Noriko Yui since 1974.
