George Alexander Albrecht (businessman)

George Alexander Albrecht (born August 2, 1834 in Hanover , † November 24, 1898 in Bremen ) was a German businessman.

Life

Albrecht, from the Hanoverian Albrecht family, completed a commercial apprenticeship at the trading company Johann Lange Sohn's Wwe. & Co. , of which he later became a partner and remained until his death. He also sat on the board of other companies. He was also the Austro-Hungarian consul .

In 1864 he married Louise Dorothea Betty Knoop (1844–1889), daughter of the industrialist Baron Ludwig Knoop . One of his sons was the businessman Carl Albrecht .

In addition to his commercial activity, he was a supporter of geographical science. He was co-founder and president of the Geographical Society in Bremen. In 1869 he took over the accounting and cash management in the executive committee of the Second German North Polar Expedition . He financed various research trips, including those of the brothers Aurel and Arthur Krause to the coastal countries of the Bering Sea (1881/1882).

Honors

A street in Bremen- Blumenthal is named after him. Carl Koldewey named it Albrecht Bai in honor of a bay in East Greenland .
