George Atlee Goodling (1973)

George Atlee Goodling (born September 26, 1896 in Loganville , York County , Pennsylvania , †  October 17, 1982 in York , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1975 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

George Goodling attended his homeland public schools, the York Collegiate Institute and the Bellefont Academy . In 1918 he served in the final stages of World War I in the US Navy . He then studied at Pennsylvania State University until 1921 . In the following years he worked in various professions and industries. Among other things, he managed an orchard near his hometown Loganville. He was also a director of a bank, an insurance company and head of a motor club. From 1933 to 1961 he was also the school director. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1943 and 1957 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .

In the 1960 congressional election , Goodling was elected to the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat James M. Quigley on January 3, 1961 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1965 . These were shaped by the events of the Cold War, including two crises around Cuba and the civil rights movement . In 1964, George Goodling was defeated by the Democrat Nathaniel N. Craley .

In the elections of 1966 he was re-elected to Congress in the 19th district of his state, where he replaced Craley on January 3, 1967. After three re-elections, he was able to spend four more terms in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 1975. During this time, the Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair took place . In 1974 he renounced another candidacy in favor of his son William . This was then also elected as his successor.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, George Goodling no longer appeared politically. He died in York on October 17, 1982 and was buried in Loganville.
