George W. Barbier (born November 19, 1864 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † July 19, 1945 in Hollywood , California ) was an American film and stage actor.

Live and act

George Barbier trained as a Protestant minister before he decided to pursue an acting career in the theater. He played on Broadway in New York in almost twenty productions between 1900 and 1931. Among Barbier's appearances were successful pieces such as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and The Front Page . However, his film career did not begin until 1930, after a 40-year stage career. His first film was a major supporting role in The Big Pond alongside Maurice Chevalier . He made other films with Chevalier in the following years, such as The Merry Widow from 1934. George Barbier, who made his film debut in his mid-60s, played in a total of 88 films until his death.

The corpulent, white-haired character actor often embodied authority figures, such as extremely wealthy industrialists or class-conscious fathers. Above all, he was seen in comedies. In Ernst Lubitsch's comedies The Smiling Leutnant (1931) and The Merry Widow (1934), alongside Maurice Chevalier , he played rather comical kings. In His Secretary of 1936, Barbier impersonated the media mogul Underwood alongside Clark Gable . Two years later he was seen as ruler Kublai Khan in the adventure film The Adventures of Marco Polo (1938) with Gary Cooper . He had one of his last significant roles in Yankee Doodle Dandy , the biopic about the entertainer George M. Cohan , which won three Academy Awards in 1943 . George Barbier died suddenly in 1945 at the age of 80; he had worked as an actor until his death. He was married to the stage actress Carolyn L. Thatcher (1870-1939).
