George Charles Calnan (born January 18, 1900 in Boston , † April 4, 1933 in Barnegat ) was an American fencer .
Life
George Calnan took part in four Olympic Games . In 1920 in Antwerp , he appeared in the foil and was eliminated in the first round . Even four years later in Paris he did not reach any of the finals , neither with the foil nor with the sword. The 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam were more successful . Although he was eliminated again with the foil in the individual in the preliminary round , he finished seventh with the team, as well as with the epee team. He finished the final round of the epee competition in individual with six wins on the bronze rank. BothAt the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , at which he took the Olympic oath on behalf of all athletes , he won further bronze medals with the foil and epee teams . In the individual in the epee competition he was seventh.
Calnan began fencing while at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, and later served as the captain of the US Navy fencing team . He died on April 4, 1933 in the crash of the airship USS Akron , of which he was a crew member, off the coast of New Jersey . At the time he held the rank of lieutenant .
