George Fawcett (born August 25, 1860 in Alexandria , Virginia , † June 6, 1939 in Nantucket , Massachusetts ) was an American actor .

Life

George Fawcett was a very popular stage actor in Great Britain and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his heyday he competed with John and Lionel Barrymore . The Virginia University graduate was a fixture on Broadway .

Fawcett only came to film at the dignified age of 55. DW Griffith was so taken with him that he hired him for several of his films. In just 15 years, Fawcett has appeared in more than 100 films, establishing his reputation as the "great old man of film". Mostly he played fathers, grumpy judges and similar roles. Shortly after the introduction and triumph of the talkie , Fawcett ended his acting career due to health problems. In 1932 he and his wife Percy performed again with the play Peacock , which he produced himself. In 1939, Fawcett died of heart failure at the age of 78.
