In the last days of the Russian Empire , a small farmer rose to lieutenant . The other officers , all of them aristocrats , grudge him and make his life difficult. He falls in love with a princess who, however, despises him. When caught in her room, he is demoted and thrown in jail. With the beginning of the October Revolution that followed, the tide turned in his favor.
Awards
Art Director William Cameron Menzies received an Oscar for the setting as well as for “Best Production Design” in The Dove at the first Academy Awards in 1929 .
