Ullrich Haupt senior

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ullrich Haupt senior (born August 8, 1887 in Falkenburg , German Empire , † August 5, 1931 in Santa Monica , California , USA ) was a German-American actor and theater director in the United States.

life and career

Ulrich Haupt began his acting career in Germany and at times owned his own theater in Berlin. In 1909 he made his first appearance in the United States, to which he ultimately relocated.

He made his film debut in 1915 in the silent US short film The Conflict . In the next two years he appeared in a number of silent films before turning back to the theater for the time being. In the 1920s he was regularly seen on Broadway in New York City . At the end of the 1920s he became known to a wide audience as a rogue actor in Hollywood, not least because of his "callous appearance" and his German accent he was predestined for such roles. He played, among other things, a vicious Russian officer in the film drama Weather Lights (1928) and a brutal cardsharps and husband of Ruth Chatterton in the melodrama Madame X (1929). Haupt played his best-known role today alongside Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper in the film drama Morocco .

At the height of his film career, Haupt died in a hunting accident in August 1931 at the age of only 43. He left behind his wife and two sons. His son was Ullrich Haupt Jr. , who moved to Germany after the death of his father and later also became an actor.
