George Herbert Barlow

George Herbert Barlow (born January 4, 1921 in Trenton , New Jersey , †  March 4, 1979 ) was an American lawyer . After his appointment by President Richard Nixon , he served as a federal judge in the Federal District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1921 until his death in 1979 .

Career

George Barlow attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire after graduating , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1943 . He then served in the US Navy until 1945 during World War II . Upon his return, he graduated from the Law School of Rutgers University in Newark in 1948 as a Bachelor of Laws , after which he practiced as a lawyer in Trenton until 1953. During this time he also served as assistant legal advisor to a commission for the revision of the state law of New Jersey. He was then assistant federal attorney for the district of New Jersey before he ran his private practice in Trenton again from 1956. He then became a commissioner in the Federal District Court for New Jersey, which he remained until 1963. He also served as a judge at the Mercer County District Court until 1966 and at the New Jersey Superior Court until 1970 .

On July 22, 1969, Barlow was appointed by President Nixon to replace the resigned Arthur Stephen Lane as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey . After confirmation by the US Senate , which took place on December 17 of the same year, he was able to take office the following day. From 1978 to 1979 he was Chief Judge Chairman of this federal court . He died on March 4, 1979 and was buried in the cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing . His seat fell to Harold A. Ackerman ; Clarkson Sherman Fisher took over the presidency of the court .
