George Hunter (painter)
George Leslie Hunter (born August 7, 1877 in Rothesay , Isle of Bute , † December 6, 1931 in Glasgow ) was a British late Impressionist painter from the group of Scottish colorists .
After immigrating to California with his family at the age of 13 , Hunter earned a living as a painter and illustrator . His early work was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco . Shortly afterwards he returned to Scotland and lived there in Glasgow. His first exhibition was at the Reid Gallery in 1916 . His work was later shown regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts .
During the 1920s, Hunter became known as a Scottish colorist along with John Duncan Fergusson , Francis Cadell and Samuel Peploe . Her works were influenced to varying degrees by the painting technique, composition and coloring of the French Impressionists and Fauvists .
Hunter's best-known landscape paintings are scenes from Fife and southern France.
