George Irving
George S. Irving (* 5. October 1874 in New York as George Henry Irving ; † 11. September 1961 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor and silent film director.
life and career
George Irving began his acting career in the theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1899 in The Only Way . In the next few years he played eleven pieces in around a dozen plays on Broadway, mostly in supporting roles. During this time he married Katherine Gilman, whom he met while working on Just Out of College , in which Gilman played the lead role. With Gilman he had two daughters named Katherine and Dorothy, Katherine also became an actress. In 1914 Irving came to Hollywood for the film industry . Irving initially worked mainly as a director and only occasionally starred in films. In 1924, however, he gave up his career as a director after around 35 films, from then on he worked exclusively as a character actor. The gray-haired, 1.83 m tall actor was cast primarily as a formidable authority figure. Irving often embodied high-ranking politicians or the military, lawyers and judges, company bosses or doctors.
After talkies began in the late 1920s, Irving's roles became increasingly smaller, so that many of his appearances were not mentioned in the film credits . Irving's better-known film appearances include Coquette with Mary Pickford and The Woman for All with Norma Shearer ; also the comedy Leopards You Don't Kiss , where he played Katharine Hepburn's lawyer Mr. Peabody in what is perhaps his most famous role today . His last of over 250 films was the comedy Miss Wildfang from 1948. In the 1950s, he had two guest roles on television before he retired from acting entirely. George Irving died of a heart attack in 1961 at the age of 86. He was buried in an unmarked grave site in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
