George Leslie Mackay

George Leslie Mackay (born March 21, 1844 in Zorra , Oxford County (Ontario) , Canada , † June 2, 1901 in Tamsui ) was the first missionary of the Presbyterian Church of Canada. He arrived in Taiwan , his place of work, in late 1871 and lived there until the end of his life.

Life

Mackay lived in Tamsui , where he ran a mission station . He married a local woman with whom he had three children and learned Chinese. He repeatedly traveled to indigenous areas to do missionary work.

Mackay established an infirmary that grew into a hospital and founded the first girls' school in Taiwan and Oxford College . This college came about when Mackay returned to Canada in 1880 after eight years of service to give an account of his work. When his compatriots found out that he was teaching his students in the shade of tall trees, they donated over $ 6,000 to build a school. Upon his return, Mackay went to work and under his direction the building was completed in 1882. The house is now part of a university. It is named after Oxford County in Canada, where the money for its construction was donated.

Mackay wrote a book about Taiwan called "From Far Formosa". This book gives a good insight into life in Taiwan at the end of the 19th century. There are also chapters about the fauna and flora of the island and even the geology with a geological map. The book has been reprinted three times in Taiwan in recent years.

aftermath

In 2008, an English-Taiwanese opera about his life entitled The Black Bearded Bible Man was staged and premiered at the Chiang Kai Shek National Cultural Center in Taipei in late November 2008 .

A total of four Mackay Memorial Hospitals emerged from the hospital founded by Mackay, in which other foreign doctors worked from an early age. a. take care of palliative care , which had hardly been established in Taiwan .
