George M. Wertz (1923)

George M. Wertz (born July 19, 1856 in Johnstown , Cambria County , Pennsylvania , †  November 19, 1928 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1925 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Wertz attended the common schools, the Ebensburg Academy and the National Normal School in Lebanon ( Ohio ). Between 1876 and 1884 he worked as a teacher and then until 1894 as a school director. From 1893 to 1896 he was a county councilor and from 1897 to 1901 sheriff in Cambria County. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . From 1908 to 1912 Wertz sat in the Senate of Pennsylvania , of which he was president since 1911. He also worked in the newspaper business and ran the Johnstown Daily Leader newspaper, which he co-founded between 1911 and 1917 . From 1914 to 1916 he held the post of Comptroller in Cambria County.

In the 1922 congressional election , Wertz was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Edward Schroeder Brooks on March 4, 1923 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1924, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1925 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Wertz worked in the real estate industry. He died on November 19, 1928 in his hometown of Johnstown.
